What Boxelder Bugs Are & Why They’re a Nuisance

Boxelder bugs belong to the order Hemiptera, making them true bugs rather than beetles. They’re roughly half an inch long with a black body marked by distinct red or orange lines. They feed primarily on boxelder trees (Acer negundo) but also appear on maple and ash trees, all of which are common around Baton Rouge.

They don’t bite, sting, or cause structural damage, and they don’t transmit disease. The problem is volume and persistence.
