Why Baton Rouge Homeowners Call Us for Pest Control

Every technician on our team is certified and brings several years of hands-on experience. We handle a wide range of insect and pest control, and our standing as one of the preferred pest control companies in Baton Rouge reflects what we put into each job. Eight technicians and service vehicles mean we can reach clients across the metro without cutting corners on service quality.

Recognizing Earwigs Around Your Home

Earwigs are slender, brown-to-black insects ranging from about a quarter inch to just over an inch long, with a reddish head, yellow-brown legs, and a distinctive pair of pincers called cerci at the tail end. Those cerci are what make most homeowners uncomfortable when they spot one. The ringlegged earwig is particularly common in Louisiana and can produce up to three generations in a single year.

Outdoors, earwigs live in yard debris: mulch, leaf piles, bark, and rotting wood. They’re nocturnal, staying tucked into dark, damp spaces during the day. When outdoor conditions shift or food becomes scarce, they move inside, showing up in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. In Baton Rouge’s warm, humid climate, they rarely need much of an invitation.

How We Approach Earwig Extermination

Most treatments stop at killing what’s visible. We go further. We treat the existing activity and then work on the moisture conditions, harborage sites, and entry points that made your home attractive in the first place. That follow-up pest management focus is part of what sets Delta Pest Services apart. If earwigs come back after we’ve treated, so do we.

What You Should Know About Earwigs

The name “earwig” comes from an old myth that these insects burrow into the ears of sleeping people to lay eggs in the brain. That’s fiction. Earwigs pose little real threat to people: they don’t transmit disease, and while their cerci can deliver a minor pinch if you handle one roughly, it isn’t dangerous. Some species also release a foul-smelling yellow liquid as a defense, which is unpleasant but harmless.

The real concern is how readily they get inside and how quickly populations can build. Earwigs are drawn to light and can wander in through open doors on their own, or hitch rides indoors on newspapers, mail, cut flowers, and other items brought in from outside. Once inside, they gravitate toward damp areas and can damage houseplants and pantry items. Outside, they’ll feed on garden and landscape plants as their numbers grow.

Reducing Earwig Activity Between Services

A few habits around the home can make a real difference between professional treatments:

Fix moisture problems first. Leaky pipes, poor drainage, and standing water near the foundation all create the damp conditions earwigs need to thrive. Addressing these removes a key draw.
Move yard debris away from the house. Mulch, leaf piles, and stacked wood sitting against the foundation give earwigs a sheltered place to live right next to your entry points. Keep those materials pulled back from the structure.
Seal gaps around doors, windows, and the foundation. Earwigs are flat-bodied and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings. Weatherstripping, door sweeps, and caulk along the foundation go a long way toward keeping them out.

These steps support the work our technicians do and help keep earwig pressure low between visits. Combined with Delta Pest Services’s integrated approach to pest management, they can give your home a lasting advantage against recurring infestations.
